Gena Lee Nolin’s tips on ageless beauty — inside and out

IMG_0005Working on the TV show ,”Baywatch”, which was filmed on the Santa Monica beach, and wearing a tiny red swimsuit is more than enough pressure for any woman in the world. Mind you, I’d sit in the makeup chair every morning for two hours morphing into a bathing suit bombshell. There were big hair, pounds of face makeup, and even the magic of body makeup to help the cast shine the way we did. I was 23 at the time, and the thought of aging was so far off the map that it almost didn’t exist for me! But now that I’m approaching 42, it’s a whole different story!

Thankfully, I’ve always felt comfortable with an easy, laid-back style. While I’ve done photo shoots where I was made up to portray a provocative buxom blonde, in actuality that wasn’t me at all. Most of the time, you’ll find me in breezy sundresses and flip-flops and wearing absolutely no makeup. Does it cross my mind that other parents at my kids’ school are comparing me to my “Baywatch” days? Of course it does! But, I’m no different than any other woman, and totally comfortable with who I am. It was when I was away from the TV spotlight and raising three children that I discovered my own interpretation of “beautiful”. I firmly believe that your inner beauty is what radiates, beyond your makeup and big, flowing hair.

Have you ever noticed that when you’re happy about something that’s completely unrelated to your looks is the moment you shine the most? Maybe you earned a college degree or found out that you’re going to become a grandmother. It’s that sense of achievement — something far greater and more important than losing 10 pounds or the zit on our chin — that makes us women feel beautiful and good about ourselves. While true beauty comes from within, outer beauty could further boost our confidence. These days, it’s easy to achieve naturally beautiful skin.

It’s important to take preventive measures to keep our skin healthy and glowing, so we can look great regardless of our age. From an early age I started taking care of my skin. To this day I wear SPF 50 when I’m in the pool with the kids or out running errands and I cleanse, tone, and moisturize my face with quality products. Products are a matter of personal preference, whether you use high-end serums, Botox or a 99-cent cream that your grandmother swore by. We all have to find our “miracle” product that helps us achieve the results we want, and it will be different for everyone.

I’m going to run you through my own personal beauty routine — the tricks of the trade I’ve picked up in my 20 years of acting and modeling. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the world’s best photographers and makeup artists who have collaborated with A-list celebrities and legendary supermodels. You can bet your bottom dollar I was paying attention and asking a million questions. And now, I’m sharing this knowledge with you.

Gena Lee Nolin’s Beauty Tips:

SKINCARE:

Kate Somerville Gentle Daily WashKate Somerville Gentle Daily WashI always keep my skin clean, and even after a fun night out, I do not go to bed with my makeup on. Doing so may clog pores and eventually cause a breakout. In the morning, I rinse my face with water, leaving the skin’s natural oils and adding Kiehls Ultra Moisturizer with 15 SPF. If I feel that my skin needs a little cleansing, I will use Kate Somerville’s Gentle Daily Wash, followed by Somerville’s Clinic-to-go pads twice per week.

At night, I use Kate Somerville’s Gentle Daily Wash followed by Kate Somerville’s Quench Hydrating Face Serum.

For minimizing dark circles and fine lines, I apply the Love My Body Youthifeye Anti-Aging Eye Treatment. As an evening moisturizer, I’ll use Kate Somerville’s Deep Tissue Repair with Peptide K8 to improve my skin’s texture and tone. I’m always changing up my routine, but I prefer Kate Somerville’s products since I believe they’re some of the best on the market.

Exfolikate intensive exfoliating treatmentExfolikate intensive exfoliating treatmentThe GOLDEN ticket for glowing skin:

I use ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment by Kate Somerville on my face twice per week and it makes my skin GLOW! It’s the most incredible feeling of clean, fresh, glowing skin that I’ve experienced. People have stopped me on the street to ask what I use on my face. For those with sensitive skin, you’ll want to use the gentle version of this formula.

Another treatment that I use twice per week (and leave on all night!) is the natural Veria ID Innerdosha “Soak it up” Highly Hydrating Mask. It leaves my skin feeling plump and dewy and is the perfect product to help those who live in dry climates like me.

BODY CARE:

As soon as I step out of the shower, I quench my thirsty skin in Veria ID Innerdosha Body Lotion, and it leaves my skin non-greasy, smooth and glowing.

HAIR CARE:

I don’t wash my hair every day. It’s good to keep the natural oils that build up in the hair and it makes your hair extra sexy! I use Veria ID Revive & Shine Hydrating Shampoo and Truly Deeply Conditioner. To keep my tresses moist and sleek, I use It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product.

MAC Studio FixMAC Studio FixMAKEUP:

Face:

On most days I skip makeup, but when I do I use L’oreal True Match Compact Foundation because it’s light, and gives me just the right coverage without looking cakey. For heavier coverage, I use M.A.C. Studio Tech Foundation, which is a combo of water, emollients and powder to give you a flawless finish. As a finishing powder that also evens out my skintone, I use T.Leclerc Loose Powder in “Banane”, which I’ve been using since I picked it up in Paris the 90s.

Eyes: I use Chanel Eye Shadow, the browns are truly the best! The formula wears long and looks smooth.

Mascara is a must. I tend to try all sorts of mascara depending on what I’m looking for at the time. Right now I’m loving L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen Hydra Collagen Plumping Mascara in black brown.

For the brows, I use the drugstore product NYC Browser Brush-On Brow Kit. This kit works wonders on those with sparse brow hairs or need to fill in areas that need a bit more color.

Lips: Drumroll… the BEST lipstick ever is M.A.C’s matte “Kinda Sexy”! It’s the perfect pinky-rose neutral color, and it works great on me since I’m not a fan of bright lipstick. I order this lipstick shade by the dozens! When I’m not wearing any makeup, I like to just wear Kiehls lip balm.

Extra bonus tips:

My routine is simple, yet effective for preventive aging. When I use the skincare products I can see and feel the difference. As we get older, less makeup and quality skincare is going to do more for you than heavy cosmetics. There’s nothing worse than someone 50 trying to look 20. Embrace your age and don’t forget to reflect on your inner beauty.

Last but not least, the best beauty trick of all is CONFIDENCE! When you feel good about yourself, you glow beyond your makeup.
